Update Bulletin 49

May I wish each and everyone a very happy New Year.

A wonderful young lady scientist who invented the board game ‘Brainac’ gave me the game to sell at a cost of $20.00 each (great value). She said she would donate $5.00 from each sale to the Kanthi Dispensary project. I have raised $275.00 from the sale of the games which will go towards the wages for the Nursery school teacher.

The New Year’s news is not terrific with regards to the water supply to Kanthi. Having sent two long emails during the holiday period to Hon. Rachael Nyamai expressing the disappointment I was feeling regarding the collapse of the projects…..I received a 28 minute telephone call from Rachael yesterday. She said she wanted to speak to me and explain the situation rather than writing emails. Apparently the source of the water to Mutomo is non functional (for whatever reason!) and so they are seeking a new source at a cost of Ksh 6,000.000.00 (A$82,192.00 approximately depending on daily rate of exchange). Initially Rachael said that the Kenyan Government set their budget and there was no other money until the next financial year’s budget. However during the conversation she said they were trying to get the water flowing to Mutomo and that Kanthi would be the first village to be connected!! There was no actual commitment to a time frame during the conversation although in Rachael’s last email she made mention of March, 2015.

I then asked about the school and she said that the allocation to build the school was ‘underfunded’ and so she said she would email me with dates regarding the building and opening of the school. I am still waiting on this email and so in the meantime the children would have to ‘walk that trek’ again.

She said they have many problems in Kenya and not a lot of money, however education was a primary concern then health.

Rachael said she visited Kanthi during the Christmas period and took photos of the projects and would forward them to me, I am still waiting on the email.

I asked about having a clinician to work in the Dispensary, Rachael said that unless it was ‘open to the general public’ and ‘not just a community venture’ then the Government would not support it. I have to contact Daniel to see what the issue is in it ‘not being open to the general public’. I am surmising that perhaps because the village people built it they (the community)therefore ‘own it’. However I have a concern of its sustainability if the clinician’s wage is dependant upon the payment received for consultations and no Government support. This is for Daniel and the village to decide and manage.

I received the cost for the joinery works for the Dispensary as follows:

4 tables Ksh 20,000.00 7 chairs Ksh 18,000.00 Examination couch Ksh 4,500.00 3 benches Ksh 2,850.00 Total Ksh 45,350.00 (A$621.00 approximately depending on exchange rate). I shall send this amount over together with Ksh 30,000.00 (A$416.00) being the wages for the Nursery school teacher for the next six months.

I received the contact details of Nze-mary who is the person who can give me full information regarding the Mutomo hospital. He may also be able to direct me onto others if necessary. I am hoping that the hospital being a Missionary hospital may see a way to send a clinician (even part time to start) to service the Dispensary…..Fingers crossed. I also need to find out about medical supplies (Rachael’s contact in the US did not come to fruition). We have many supplies here which were kindly donated however the cost of shipping and their actual arrival is a grave concern!

We are slowing hopefully getting to the ‘finishing post’ with regards to the Dispensary becoming operational.

Update Bulletin 48

Firstly may I wish everyone a very happy New Year and trust that 2015 will be a good year for everyone, with good health and happiness.

I received the photos below from Daniel showing the people of Kanthi celebrating a Christmas lunch together thanks to your generosity. I was elated when I received the photos but this elation was short lived. However the good news first seeing the community coming together…..all with their Sunday best!

This elation was short lived! Bearing in mind the break down of the water supply from the source to Mutomo commenced in September, 2014, and when I expressed my disgust at their working timeframes, six months to repair a problem, possibly March, 2015, I received the following email from Rachael, herself, not her PA. I also believe that the water from the source to Mutomo was put on by an NGO, therefore they only needed to maintain it!

Dear all,

Helen on behalf of the people of Kanthi and beyond. I thank you for all you have done. I believe what we need is not change of heart but an effort to understand the processes and our situation in Kenya. I also ask that no one misinforms Helen otherwise this will become a blame game which breaks hearts.

Kindly let us all make Hellen understand how things work here. We plan for activities within a stipulated budget and timelines, the funds are availed and nothing can be changed mid course. There is nothing a MP can do without having planned for an activity in advance. We are also highly underfunded. Pastor Ntheeu and all friends can help in making our friends and donors understand what we can do and the commitment We have to work for the people of Kitui south.

The matter of concern here is of Kithini-Mutomo water source and repairs at mutomo area which is not a small project. This is the only way we will get sustainable flow to Kanthi. I will be very happy to get assistance from anywhere in the world to see water flow properly in Mutomo and reach Kanthi area without problems. On our part as CDF this is part of our 2014-2015 biannual plan. I belief this will happen soon. I will also ask whether there are any temporary measures possible. At no time have I ever stopped development to any part of my constituency and more so Kanthi where we are celebrating development from Helen and her friends.

From the email below it is clear that Helen believes that Rachael is failing to do her job with all the resources available. You are all aware that I do not sit in any water board as we all rely on CDF for all our activities….which are all pre-planned. Misinformation brings mistrust and I would like to work with all development partners in a good way. Starting with Hellen and beyond. Our commitment to the classroom at Kanthi stands and the classroom will be completed this half year. I also committed to ensuring that we secure a good nurse or clinical officer. From my communication with Ntheeu, we need to find ways if initially supporting until we are able to get a Government or NGO nurse. The email is discouraging but my support and responsibility is steadfast for Kanthi school and dispensary…..I am still as committed as I have been. We need to register this dispensary as soon as possible. Dominic my PA can help with this. All health facilities must be registered by Government of Kenya. Let’s start the process and work happily. This has been my spirit and it makes my work with the poorest of the poor to succeed. Daniel please tell Helen that I am not horrible. I hope we can get a good way of working together to support the people.

Kind regards

Rachael

Note Rachael’s commitment on 6th July, 2014:

Dear Hellen,

We appreciate the contribution you make in Kanthi village and all you have done so far as enumerated and seen on the ground. We have already done the land purchase and now are working on a classroom and eventually a school in your honor and all others who support this village. Indeed this is commendable.

Regarding the dispensary…..I encourage you to proceed with the idea. We will contact the necessary authorities at the county level as health in Kenya is devolved function to counties Govts. This I will do when the structure is done. We can also explore ways of collaborating with you as a constituency after we deliver the classroom.

As we do in our plans it’s one project at a time so to discuss the next project, we must deliver the classroom to the primary school first.

As always I thank you

Cheers

Rachael Nyamai

My disappointment, frustration and anger is that ‘it seems to be political spin’! Six months and not a sod of soil turned to build the Primary School. Now our graduate Nursery School children have to walk 4 km to school risking attacks from animal not to mention ‘the two legged animals’! Due to the lack of water, there have been no crops sown in the Greenhouse and so no produce sales, no income and therefore no money to pay the Nursery School teacher this first term. I therefore committed to pay the teacher for the first six months at Ksh 5,000.00 per month, equalling Ksh 30,000.00 (A$416.00 approx.). I have these funds due to the generosity of wonderful people’s contributions. I have already paid the first term food allocation.

I feel so much for these wonderful people who have worked so hard, digging with their bare hands, making bricks etc and through no fault of their own ‘their world collapses’ due to the seemingly lack of care from their Government. Daniel is committed to finishing the Dispensary and I am going to contact the Catholic Hospital in Mutomo to see if I can enlist assistance/guidance to know what fitting, supplies are necessary. Hopefully if the water is resolved then we may get ‘back on track again’ however I wish to continue with support to overcome this hurdle!
