Update Bulletin 45

What talented people, from digging the soil, making and firing the bricks to this amazing structure. How awesome to see this structure in a remote village in Kenya. Note the roof which would be ideal to catch the water, if it rains!

Daniel wrote:

DEAR HELLEN,

WE THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO US.THE ROOFING HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND WE PAID THE CONSTRUCTOR THIRTY THOUSAND NOW WE WANT TO START PLASTERING

THANK YOU MAY GOD BLESS YOU.

I forward Ksh 100,000.00 (A$1,301.00) yesterday for the plastering works to continue on.

This is truly amazing for this village in Kenya, I am going to write and send photos to Hon. Rachael Nyamai MP to ask her what the Kenyan Government’s contribution will be now that the building works are progressing so well and are hopefully finished by Christmas. I shall request that Rachael registers the Dispensary (Medical Clinic) upon its completion and provide a clinician to work in the centre. Also Rachael mentioned in her email that she was trying to source a donor in America for supplies for the Dispensary. I shall ask how her efforts are progressing towards stocking the Dispensary.

Thank you to everyone who contributed towards this project on behalf of the people of Kanthi.

Update Bulletin 44

Wow what a sight for sore eyes, the roof going on the Dispensary (Medical Clinic). They sure have been working hard ‘to beat the rains’. For those who are interested in building works take note of the lintels above the doorways and windows, they appear to be concrete. Also note the gable roof, steel structure, the ladders for climbing onto the roof, no CFMEU in Kanthi!

The people of Kanthi have been without water for a few weeks, the pump at the source of water for the village broke down and it was up to the Government to repair it, which as we know takes sometime, weeks in fact, and so they had to go out to the river beds and dig in the sand to a water table to source water. However finally it has been fixed and so they are now to replant as you will note in Daniel’s email.

DEAR HELLEN,

First receive much greatings.I wanted to inform you that we planted the cowpeas (attached is a photo of greenhouse planted cowpeas)but they never succeeded because of water problem, now we are trying to aproot the cowpeas and plant the tomatoes.

Attached are the receipt for expences which we incured for roofing , we wanted to roof before the end of this week, the step which we want to follow now is plastering because there is water.

Failed cowpea crop, Building materials receipts

The way they are working we may have the Dispensary finished by Christmas, oh what an achievement!

Update Bulletin 43

I received this email from Hon. Rachael Nyamai in response to my emails regarding our works in particular the Dispensary and requesting the Kenyan Government’s assistance as two of our wonderful supporters (in the medical profession) wish to go to Kanthi to work in the Dispensary in the New Year. Rachael mentioned Elective Abroad, however I checked Google for Elective Africa and so shall contact them directly for assistance and also request their professional opinion on Ebola and safety in Kenya. The following is as Hon. Rachael Nyamai writes:

“Dear Helen,

I am back to Kenya after a long period of travel and work outside my constituency. Ist I apologize that this has taken too long to get back to you and give you the assurance that we are really thrilled by the work that you and the people of Australia….the women friendship group are doing. My silence and that of my office does not mean that they are indifferent or that do not care. They do not respond on a matter which is new or if they do not understand such as the one for nurses.

This is my belated response.

a. Just as the men and women in Kanthi village we are looking forward to a village center of excellence which will support people beyond the village. I have given my commitment to you band the community that we will walk together in this.

B. The assistance with the school and hospital are most welcome. That’s why CDF has decided to fully collaborate with you and your friends in making this a reality. This includes ensuring that the school is registered and we ensure that we build classrooms even beyond the one that we have given. This has been shared with pastor and he trusts we will do.

C. I will connect the two ladies to elective abroad which is a local company that will handle this matter. They place students in hospitals and also arrange for medical tourism for various groups. Where documentation is required through the ministry of health, I will reach our to the minister of health to help out. I only chair the committee of health in parliament but we work closely so documentation should not be a problem. For the insurance elective abroad handles this on daily basis so they should handle this. Your documents will be required for this purpose.

D. I travelled to the US to seek MEdical supplies. I got a serious donor. We will collaborate to get some commodities for Kanthi with you and probably the women friends.

E. The food donated for the kids is highly appreciated. Here there are kids who won’t go to school due to lack of food. Government can’t afford food and helping hand is most welcome.

F. When am back to my constituency this weekend, I will find out what’s happening on the classroom for your school and make a more informed comment.

G. Nairobi is okay in terms of safety. It’s important that proper arrangements are made to the hotels though and safe transport to mutomo. I am sure you don’t need to worry about this. In case you require elective abroad….this will be handled but Ntheeu will give us guidance on this.

I will later go through the mails to respond yo any matter which I may not have responded to.

Lastly believe you me. We will walk this journey with you and your commitment is super. I thank you and I am sorry for the late response to all the important matters raised.

Pls Cheer Up and let run with all the women you have brought together for the sake of the people of Kanthi. Be blessed.

Hon Rachael Nyamai “

The above is so exciting, with the Women’s Friendship Group starting in providing the means to feed the village people of Kanthi in 2011 to having the collaboration of the Kenyan Government in our projects is amazing!

Thank you to all who have supported these project which are enhancing so many lives on another continent.

Cheers,

HELEN

Update Bulletin 42

As mentioned in Update Bulletin No. 41 I am enclosing the receipts I received from Daniel regarding the purchase of materials for the Dispensary. The following are the receipts.

I received a telephone call from Daniel requesting more money as they were almost up to putting the roof on, a job Daniel was in a hurry to complete before the ‘rains’ hopefully due in late October early November. He stated that if the roof is on then they can carry on with works inside the building. I sent Ksh 100,000.00 (A$1,339.00) being the third instalment. To date I have forwarded a total of Ksh 426,270.00 (A$5,538.56 including the Western Union transfer fees.). I shall request the other receipts from Daniel once the roof is on as he appears to have ‘enough on his plate’ at the moment. He sounded very pleased with the construction works, and rightly so.

Again thanks to everyone who has supported the project and should you wish to read past update bulletins please visit website www.walkforwater.com.au/news
